Finding employment is not easy. Most college students think that once they finish college, they will find a job immediately. Yet, finding a job can be quite the challenge for a recent graduate. Many other people have also just graduated and are looking to grab the same job as you are. A single job opening can get hundreds of resumes, so the competition is definitely fierce.
If you want to find a job, you must dedicate time to this search. You should talk to people about it, search for jobs on the internet, look in the newspaper ads; go to job fairs, etc.
For most graduates, finding their first job takes a lot of time. But there is a way to speed up the process. If you treat “job finding” as your actual job, you will see much better results.
Pretend as if “finding work” is your actual full-time job. This means that you spend at least eight hours a day working at it. Remember, you are not “unemployed”. You do have a job, and it happens to be that of a “full-time job-seeker”.
Alternatively, you can go to an actual full-time job-finder and let them do most of this work for you. Feel free to submit your resume to us, and we’ll help you find that job a lot faster. There’s no need to go at it alone.
Once you find the job, you need to prepare for massive changes in your schedule. A full-time job requires eight or more hours a day. This can come as a shock to your system at first. You will probably be exhausted after work and just want to go home and relax.
You won’t be able to make plans with people during your working hours. Also, you won’t be able to go out as much during the weeknights because you will have to get up early in the morning.
You might have been a regular party person during the weekdays, but things will now change. One of the worst things on the planet is trying to make it through a full-working-day with a nasty hangover. You can go out during the week, but after a while, you’ll see you prefer those quiet evenings.
In college, you probably had a low budget and you were used to it. Once you start receiving bigger amounts of money, it might make your spending habits a bit more irrational. You might rent a big apartment, buy designer clothes, go on fancy trips, and more. This is normal when people’s budget grows rapidly, but you should be aware of this impulse and keep it in check.
You probably have student loans and want to handle that sooner rather than later. Also, it’s wise to start saving from the moment you get that first paycheck. Put aside a certain amount of money each month. Your real “spending budget” is what’s left over after you put some money away into that savings account.
You might end up joining a company that has a lot of other recent grads and young people. However, this doesn’t mean you can act like you’re still in college. You need to show that you are a serious professional. The conversations you have with your co-workers shouldn’t be about your Twitter or Instagram followers. They should be about real-life challenges.
Also, you need to understand that your co-workers might be at a different stage in life. For example, if they are older, you might not understand or like their opinions. Yet, you need to respect them and expect to get the same treatment
If you do something for a long period of time, it might become boring. The same goes for your job. There might be times when you’re bored, but you can always do something about it. You can ask for additional assignments or involvement in new projects within the company. Taking on new projects that you haven’t done before is the right way to grow as a professional.
Promotion mostly depends on the industry you’re in and the company. In some companies, it’s easier to get a promotion. But in others, you may have to wait many years before you get even a single promotion. The most important thing is to set realistic expectations. Don’t expect a promotion after a couple of months. Otherwise, you’ll end up disappointed and your motivation for work will decrease.
A big transition in lifestyle is never easy, but there are a couple of habits you can adopt to make it go a little smoother. Let’s look at these right now.
You’re not a student anymore, so there are no assigned books that you “must read”. Now it’s time to read for pleasure and personal growth.
Reading can help you keep your brain sharp, sleep better and relax. That’s exactly what you need when you go through these changes in your lifestyle. In time you’ll see that a quiet evening at home with a book in your hands becomes priceless. If you pick the right books, it will also help you get ahead in your career as well.
Relationships might become harder to maintain once you’re an employed person. You might become separated from your friends by distance, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to keep in touch with them. You need to reach out to them every once in awhile and try to keep them involved in your life. This will actually make it easier to cope with your new working life.
You should always call your friends from college. The same goes for your family, or the family members you used to hang out with. Those are the people who love you and will always want to support you and see you succeed.
If you’re not a fan of routines, you don’t have to plan every minute of every single day. You just need to create a loose structure for your week, so that you can stay organized and accomplish more.
When you set up a well-organized schedule for work, chores, exercise and more, you’ll find out that you have a lot more time than you might’ve thought.
Once you finish college, you’ll come to realize that creating a routine is quite necessary. Even those people who “hate having a routine” tend to create one as the benefits become obvious over time.
A big change in lifestyle is difficult as it is, you don’t need to make it harder than it has to be. When you’re a recent graduate, looking for work can be quite tough.
It is so stressful that people sometimes give up and settle for a job that’s far from ideal. They often accept much less than they deserve, just so they don’t have to suffer more of that “job searching” stuff. They want it over and done with.
What if this could all be made a lot easier and more enjoyable? Well, it actually can be. If you partner up with a quality employment agency you can save a lot of time and avoid much stress. Not to mention the fact that you’ll likely pick up a much better job, faster.
